Aztec astrology

The Astrology of Meso-America
by Ed Tamplin

Of all the astrological studies of the world perhaps the least understood and written about is that of the Meso Americans. This area comprising Central America and Mexico was home to the great Mayan and later Aztec civilizations between 1500 BC and 1519 AD. This civilization was the most advanced in the Western Hemisphere. Their cities rivaled the size and majesty of European equivalents, and in semblance to Egyptian culture they wrote in pictograph language and built pyramids to complement their astral observations. They employed a system of timekeeping second to none among ancient cultures. Even today we marvel at the accuracy of the Mayan Long-Count calendar, capable of pinpointing any individual date over thousands of years. To the Mayan, mastery of time meant mastery of life.

Astrology was a unifying factor to Meso American life and from birth God/Kings such as Montezuma were trained to be experts of the art. One of the reasons that we are still uncovering their secrets today is that in the cultural genocide that followed the Spanish invasion of 1519, only four books remained intact and are now housed at Dresden, Paris and Madrid. These bark remnants of centuries of civilization, folded like an accordion and housed in jaguar skin, along with the ruins of their once great cities, provide us with an insight into the cosmology and rituals of the MesoAmerican native.

Central to their belief was that the world had been destroyed and recreated four times previously and that we are now living in the fifth and final age of the Sun. According to the most accepted decoding of the Mayan calendar, this age began on August 13 3114 BC, and will end on December 22 2012. The increasing number of cataclysmic earthquakes that have greeted our entry into the 21st century would have a special significance for the Maya. They believed the earth would be subject to giant earthquakes in these final days.

In the first period of the Sun (Matlactili) the earth was populated by giants and destroyed by a great flood. The end of the second Sun period (Ehecatl) came by wind where mention is made of men as monkeys, with one man and one woman eventually preserved in what was known as the Golden Age. There may be parallels to the Adam and Eve story here because in the preceding third period (Tleyquiyahuillo) their descendants ate of a special fruit called Tzincoacoc, until fire brought their end. The fourth Sun (Tzontlilac) period ended through starvation, following a rain of blood and fire.
