Beijing olympics

The horoscope for the Beijing Olympics, timed for the opening ceremony, is sobering.

The planet that rules the Ascendant, Jupiter, is in its detriment and in retrograde motion.

In astrology the planet which rules the rising sign shows the strength and motivation of the people running the event.

In this case Jupiter in its detriment suggests that all is not well. Its apparent retrograde (backwards) motion suggests a defensive and perhaps fearful posture.

Jupiter is also in an ‘antiscia conjunction’ to the apex of the horoscope, which is called ‘the Midheaven’. An ‘antiscia conjunction’ to the Midheaven suggests a hidden motivation concerning power and control in regards to its public image. Jupiter’s very negative state suggests these motivations are not constructive.

Planets connected with the power points of the horoscope are said to be angular. In this case Venus and Saturn are angular.
Venus is sitting just outside the cusp of the 7th house, the place of open enemies. Normally Venus is regarded as a very positive influence. It is called a ‘benefic’, meaning that its influence is beneficial. It is traditionally associated with the arts and diplomacy, and feminine influences.

However in this case Venus is in the sign of its fall, which means that it is behaving badly, and therefore its capacity for adroit diplomacy is minimised. Whatever it represents is likely to behave in a clumsy and inappropriate manner, perhaps with little sensitivity for Chinese protocol.

Planets represent matters associated with the houses that they rule. In this horoscope Venus rules the third house of communications, which presumably has a lot to do with the media. China no doubt sees the foreign media at the games as its open enemies. With Venus on the Descendant the media are shown to be a powerful influence, and because Venus is so close to the power point opposite the Ascendant, which represents China, the media are seen as being opposed to China’s interests.

Venus also rules the house associated with death and we only hope that this does not have a literal meaning in the context of the Olympic games. However this house placement does suggest that fear and suspicion colour media’s presentation of events.

Because Venus is in the sign of Jupiter’s fall (in Virgo), the media are very critical of the Chinese authorities, who are represented by Jupiter. The media have an intense dislike of the way that China handles the Olympics.

Saturn is also placed on the same power point as Venus, just inside the Descendant. It rules the 11th house of hopes and dreams, as well as the 12th house of ‘self-undoing’.

So many dreams for China ride on this one event, and the ruler of the 11th house here is so appropriate. Because Saturn is also the ruler of the 12th house, it suggests that China might also be the author of its own undoing. The authorities have a hand in anything that goes wrong.

The Moon in a horoscope for an event shows public sentiment and the direction of events.
In this case the Moon is in its fall and placed in a location which is associated with anxiety. The Moon in its fall suggests that the common people are not happy, and the 8th house placement suggests some disturbance, at least in terms of how the people feel. The 8th house is also associated with death, and we can only hope, as stated earlier, that the word does not have a literal meaning in this case.

The Moon separates from a sextile with Saturn and applies by sextile to Jupiter. So the Moon carries the hopes and dreams of the people and the country as a whole to its ruling planet. However this planet is in a most unhappy state, which points to the conclusion that China is unhappy with the results. It does not suggest that the games are the success that it hopes for.

When we compare that horoscope of Communist China with the horoscope for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games the obvious standout is the conjunction of the Sun of the Games horoscope with Pluto in China’s horoscope. The Sun is the natural representation the identity of the Games, and Pluto represents unconscious motivations and the urge to control. Because Pluto is located in the sector associated with open enemies, the rest of the world who are its competitors, this shows a very strong attempt to control representatives from the outside world.

Perhaps more remarkable than anything written above, is the fact that the Solar Eclipse for the 1st August 2008 begins on the North American continent and terminates near Beijing, which is exactly where the Olympic Games begin one week later.

Eclipses have traditionally been regarded with great foreboding. They represent the release of hidden energies that have lain dormant. Because the Moon blocks out the light of the sun in this case, it is the unconscious repressed energies, which come to the surface for release. The Sun represents the ruling power and the Moon represents the people. Eclipses often coincide with precipitous events that change the course of history. Because this eclipse occurs so close in time and place to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, we can expect this to be a most unforgettable event.
