A couple of years before I was thrust into the astrology game by an editor who wanted me to write (one of those funny astrological columns) I discovered the thrill of the race track and quickly realised that there was far more money to be lost gambling than you could accumulate through winning. At school I regularly ran a Melbourne Cup sweep and always managed to win more than the first prize by ‘punting’ on what horses were likely (in my opinion) to run badly by duplicating their names many times in the sweeps. The headmaster of my school (when he discovered what I was doing) insisted that I stop the practice. That was the last year I ran a Melbourne Cup sweep at school and the pupil who elected to take over the service made a mess of the job and his parents had to bail him out of the predicament he found himself in. On leaving school I found lucrative employment (part-time) with one of Sydney’s most successful Starting Price Bookmakers. Every Saturday and holiday weekend I balanced the betting slips and books for my boss (Bob) and in the process I earned about triple what my department head was being paid at Tooths Brewery in Broadway, Sydney. These experiences taught me the value of money and at an early age I realised that the racing game is anything but a game. Anyone who imagines there is an easy fortune to be made through any form of speculation is close to being a screaming idiot.
You can however have quite a lot of enjoyment through racing speculation – provided you follow the rules and provided you always use a great deal of common sense! That last ingredient is something very few seem to have and even those who do have it fail to use it a lot of the time.
Briefly they can be summarised as follows:
If you have managed to read these comments so far you are now ready to go to the next vitally important step in chasing winners and that is practice.
Chasing the Winners In After the recent Melbourne Cup I received several dozen letters from readers who backed all placegetters by following my racing system. The best way to ‘practice’ is by not listening to the races and by not placing a bet for at least six months.
