Sports Astrology Stuart James

Sports Astrology - Stuart James

Sport provides a great arena for testing astrological theory. There is a winner and a loser in the vast majority of professional sporting contests. The answer is there in black and white and you will know generally in the space of 2 to 3 hours whether your prognostication is correct. This article describes some of the methods I use to analyse a sporting competition using astrological techniques.

There are 3 main techniques employed looking at the start, duration and projected end of the match.

Horary Method

Under this method, a horoscope is erected for the exact beginning of the match. The Ascendant / First House represents the home team, the 10th house their scoring and the 5th house their game. Conversely, the 7th house represents the away team, the 4th house their scoring and the 11th their game.

Sextiles and trines between the rulers of, or planets located in, the 1st, 10th and 5th houses augers well for the home team. Squares and Oppositions denote difficulties in winning. Conjunctions can go either way depending on the planets involved.

The same applies for the away team, except you use the 7th, 4th and 11th house planets and rulers. I find planets exactly on an angle at the start of the match have the most importance, while planets forming exact aspects during the match are also telling.

E.g. Recently the 2007 NRL season kicked off, with Sydney Roosters hosting the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Monday 19 March 2007 at Aussie Stadium in Round 1. The match commenced at 7.14 pm AEDT putting the Moon exactly conjunct the Descendant / 7th house cusp, and was therefore in exact opposition to the Ascendant / 1st house cusp. The Moon ruled the Cancer Midheaven / 10th house cusp.

The Ascendant and Midheaven related to the home team – Sydney, and the opposition relationship between 10th house ruler and 1st house suggested the Sydney Roosters would struggle. Souths ended up winning 18-6.

Transits

Transits are the most difficult area of sports astrology to decipher. First of all, looking at the background alignments is important to get a general idea to whether events will proceed as expected or there can be an upset to the status quo. A well aligned Saturn usually results in events proceeding as expected, while Pluto turns up more than any other planet when there are major upsets.

Next, you need to ascertain how the prevailing planetary energy will affect a team. Looking at transits to coaches, key players and First Game charts will help in this endeavour.

E.g. A coach experiencing a transiting Pluto opposition to their natal Sun is going to have some major obstacles. It requires some quicker moving planets to “trigger” the alignment, but overall this is hard to win with.

Such is the case presently with NSW Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie. The recent solar eclipse at 28 degrees Pisces square Pluto at 28 degrees Sagittarius triggered this difficult Pluto opposite Sun transit, and the Waratahs suffered an upset loss to the Stormers in round 7 of the 2007 Super 14 competition.

End Game Alignments

Some sports have reliable duration lengths, which enables you to construct a good estimate chart for the end of the match. It makes sense that conditions at this point in time will have a major impact on the eventual outcome, especially if both teams looks evenly matched. Sports such as NRL, Aussie rules, Rugby Union and soccer fall into this category.

Transiting planets on angles at the end of the game have a huge bearing on the final outcome. Certain positions auger for the home or away team, others indicate the favourite or an upset. The relation of the natal charts of key personnel to the angles is also important.

This is a departure from normal astrological practice of having the natal chart of a person on the inner ring, and then positioning the transiting planets on the outer ring to see how the patterns are relating to a person. Here, we put the event chart on the inner ring and then locate the natal chart on the outer ring to see how the individual relates to the event – the end of the game.

Generally, the team leader – captain in NRL or quarterback in American Football, has a greater chance of winning if they have natal planets crossing the Midheaven, while the coach does better with planets crossing the Descendant.

Conclusion

A typical match will have conflicting indicators between all 3 systems, but occasionally you will have a situation where all 3 systems agree and you have a great chance of predicting the winner.
